Chester Pride 2019

Chester Pride – Official Photography

Earlier this year I was asked to be the official photographer for Chester Pride. How can I say no! Being a massive supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and having photographed many same sex weddings and civil ceremonies it was a massive honour to be asked to be part of such a wonderful celebration.

With my Brother – In – Law and his partner being key members of the organisational team it was amazing to see them come into their own on the day in full flow making sure the parade ran smoothly and all the events and acts were able to perform on time. It also gave me an immense sense of pride to see them deal with such adversity as the original date was cancelled due to bad weather and for them to then have six weeks to pull of this incredible celebration. I had an amazing day and it really was great to see the city of Chester rally together for this wonderful celebration.

With a parade through the streets of  Chester culminating in an amazing celebration with music from Whigfield and headlined by Ex-Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle.

Didsbury Wedding Photography

Military wedding in didsbury

Ahhh Didsbury, what a place. A leafy urban suburb to the south of Manchester it’s a bit of an oasis from the city and is home to some of my favourite Manchester wedding venues and portrait spots.

There are numerous pubs, all with great beer gardens, so it’s a fab place for me to meet up with couples and I’ve had many an engagement shoot in the area too. From cobbled streets to tree lined avenues and parkland there’s never a shortage of locations for me to take couples to for their Didsbury wedding photography.

Weddings at Didsbury House and 11 Didsbury Park

The most well known Didsbury wedding venue is the lovely Didsbury House Hotel, and its sister venue, 11 Didsbury Park.

A luxury Victorian townhouse, Didsbury house has been turned into an eclectic, stylish boutique hotel and one of Manchester’s most popular wedding venues.

Weddings held here have a real ‘house party’ feel to them especially as it’s exclusive use so couples and their guests get to take over the entire place for a couple of days. Even though it has been designed with luxury in mind the house has retained a warm and homely vibe meaning everyone relaxes as soon as they step through the door. Chilled out, happy guests always make for the best weddings!

Just a few steps away lies 11 Didsbury Park. Another Victorian villa, the house is surrounded by leafy hedges and has a fantastic walled garden. It’s perfect for spring and summer weddings as guests can enjoy an outdoor BBQ and play lawn games into the evening. Like Didsbury House, 11 Didsbury Park has a really lovely informal feel to it as everyone makes themselves at home there!

Wedding photographs at Fletcher Moss

Just down the road from Didsbury House, Fletcher Moss Park is the perfect place to wander to with newly married couples who want a few minutes away from the party to reflect on their day and, of course, get some portraits taken!

The park is 21 acres of greenery, including the beautiful Botanical Gardens and meadows. It’s a bit of a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city and, with so many nooks and crannies, it’s perfect for couple portraits. I’ve even been known to venture here for pre-wedding shoots as well so know all the best spots now!

The Old Parsonage wedding venue

Across the road from Fletcher Moss is the Old Parsonage, a beautiful building filled with history and surrounded by gardens. It’s thought to be the oldest buildings in Didsbury – well, after St James Church which overlooks it!

This is a real DIY wedding venue which always makes for relaxed days and couples looking to do away with tradition and have a wedding that really reflects them. The oak panels and stained glass inside the Parsonage look amazing and are great for some creative portraits while guests explore the grounds. As with Didsbury House I always like to nip across to Fletcher Moss too for some natural portraits of the two of you relaxing together.

Healey Barn Wedding Photography // Lainey and Will

Healey Barn Wedding Photography

Healey Barn Wedding PhotographyBack in June I made my way up to Northumberland for Lainey and Will’s Healey Barn wedding. It was a pretty epic trip but it was more than worth it. I’ve been looking forward to blogging this wedding for a while now, these two were so much fun to be around and we didn’t stop laughing once!

Wedding photography at Healey Barn

When Lainey visited Healey Barn she fell in love the setting and knew that the warm and welcoming feel of the barn was exactly what she was after for their wedding day. The couple made the most of the rustic barn and filled it with vintage vases and beautiful white floral centrepieces. I love the ‘selfie kit’ that they put together too, full of hilarious props and selfie sticks.

Will spent the time before the ceremony laughing and joking with his friends, but I think the nerves kicked in slightly when he heard that the VW campervan, carrying Lainey and her bridesmaids, had arrived. As soon as he turned and saw Lainey walking towards him his smile lit up the room and I could almost feel him relax. It’s so obvious how in love these two are and how much they enjoy being in each other’s company.

Bride and groom at Healey Barn

After the ceremony Lainey and Will were enveloped in a sea of hugs and well wishes. I love these moments for photography – loads of happy faces, loads of laughter and those all important congratulatory squeezes, perfect for any wedding photographer at Healey Barn!

Once they were all hugged out the three of us decided to sneak away to get some portraits of the two of them. I always explain to couples that while this is a great chance for me to get some pictures of them it’s also a really good time for them to catch up, have a breather and just enjoy being married for a few minutes!

Healey Barn has no shortage of great portrait locations. We got a few pictures with the VW camper before setting off for a wander around the grounds. I like to keep this part nice and relaxed. The three of us just go for a stroll and I take photos along the way! Some couples love throwing in the odd pose or two while others just like to enjoy their time together and I capture that. Whatever works best for you!

“Stick at it, don’t stress yourself out. It really will all just come together.”

Wise words from Katie and something I tell all my couples. Don’t sweat the small stuff, the day is about the two of you and at the end of it if you’re married and have had a brilliant time then it’s been a success!

Wedding photography at Rivington Barn

I was back at one of my all time favourite wedding venues for Katie and Kieran’s day. They’d spent a lot of time at the Barn for various events as well as enjoying walks up there with their little boy Max so when it came to choosing where to get married there was only one place for them.

Wedding days are perfect for people watching and documentary photography. A whole host of friends and family coming together to eat, drink and be merry. Katie and Kieran’s guests were amazing and up for a laugh from the moment we all arrived at Rivington. The good natured heckling during the speeches was hilarious and as soon as the music started everyone hit the dancefloor for one of the best partys I’ve seen this year. That’s no mean feat guys, I’ve been a part of some absolute belters, but yours is way up there!

Before the party got going though I took Kieran and Katie out for a breather, and some portraits of the two of them. It was really touching to get the below review from Katie. It’s always an honour to photograph a friend’s wedding and I loved being part of their day!

“I’ve always loved Nik’s work, He is an old school friend and ever since he started photography I always knew I wanted him to do my wedding one day! Nik and his second photographer were fantastic on the day. They were a great laugh, extremely professional and I would recommend them to anyone.”

Isle Of Wight Photography

Exploring godshill model village

After a pretty busy wedding season it was time for a well deserved break. I say busy wedding season but as I write this I still have 4 weddings left to shoot and 3 family shoots! Holidays on the Isle Of Wight have become something of a yearly trip since my cousin moved down to the Island over 10 years ago I don’t think I can remember a year I haven’t visited. As a wedding photographer the Isle Of Wight is a nice break but I will always take my camera, can’t ever leave the photographer in me at home.

Since having our little boy holidaying in England has become something of a familiarity as it is more affordable than heading abroad and our country has some beautiful places to visit, The Isle Of Wight being one of them.

We spent most of a rainy visit exploring new places and revisiting some of our favourites. One place that will always be on the visit list is Sandown Pier. There is something about 2p arcade machines and rubbish games on the pier that really make a British seaside holiday! From the pier to the model village at Godshill and to hunting dinosaurs at Dino Isle and then visiting Amazon world we had the best little break.

From visiting for Bestival to family holidays now The Isle Of Wight will always hold a special place in my heart. Because of this I have been researching wedding venues and would absolutely love to photograph a wedding on the Island but haven’t been lucky enough to do so yet. No matter where you are in the world as a photographer you can never switch off. Most places we visited I was spotting opportunities for pre wedding shoots and wedding portraits! As I haven’t managed to book a wedding as of yet you will have to enjoy these photos of our little holiday to the Island.

Until next time!

Willington Hall Wedding Photography

Willington Hall Wedding Photography

married couple walk through the gardens at willington hall

I’ve got a real treat on the blog today for you. I’m a huge fan of joyful weddings (aren’t we all!) and Chris and Rebecca’s Willington Hall wedding was packed full of laughter and fun.

A former country house set amidst Cheshire fields, Willington Hall is a stunning wedding venue. The grounds are incredible with lots of hidden corners and nooks and crannies – perfect for sneaking off to for couple’s portraits! There’s a real warmth to the building (not just caused by the striking orange brickwork) but it feels like someone’s home and weddings have a real ‘house party’ vibe to them.

Weddings at Willington Hall

I met up with Rebecca and her girls a few hours before the ceremony. They were all being pampered up in the beautiful, sunny bridal suite. The flower girls (Rebecca’s nieces) kept her nerves at bay as they chattered away about the day. Their excitement was infectious!

As the girls were getting glammed groom to be Chris was down in the bar where he was greeting guests and enjoying a pre-wedding pint so i spent a little time flying up and down stairs to capture them both which is easy if both bride and groom are getting ready in the same place. Brides have told me how much they love looking at what their new husband got up to on the wedding morning and having two perspectives during the wedding ceremony and speeches is always a real bonus.

Willington Hall wedding party

At Willington Hall couples have a choice of rooms to hold their ceremony in, or if the weather is playing ball they can say their vows out in the grounds in the Garden Temple. Rebecca and Chris opted for the Richmond Room which is perfect for photography, the glass ceiling lets in plenty of lovely light while the doors look out onto the beautiful gardens.

Rebecca and Chris had planned an intimate day with their nearest and dearest. They surrounded themselves with their favourite people and that included their two dogs who turned up in the afternoon! Brody and Hugo joined us for some pictures which was a lot of fun. I know they say never to work with children and animals but I love the mayhem they cause!

Kilhey Court Wedding Photography // John and Sammie

Kilhey Court Wedding Photography

Married couple walk through the grounds of Kilhey CourtBack in August I spent the day at Kilhey Court for John and Sammie’s wedding.

I started the day with Sammie at their home in Bolton. The fab Siobhan and Tabatha from HD Salon were making sure the girls all looking their best, the tunes were on and everyone was in celebratory mode. Sammie’s Dad had tucked himself away from the action so he could go over his speech and catch up with the newspapers. Dads always try and hide somewhere while the girls take over the house, it makes me smile every time! He did venture out to give Sammie a huge hug and I think that’s one of my favourite photos from the day, so much emotion in a single image.

John and the boys were getting ready at John’s brother’s house where Olivia , my second photographer joined them. Groom prep is always much more reserved than bridal prep and John’s was no exception. The lads were just keen to get ready and get everything started. I think they were all counting down to that post ceremony pint!

Traditional church wedding ceremony

John and Sammie had chosen to get married at their local church, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. They were both fighting the usual pre-ceremony nerves before everything started bu Father Folkes reassured them and kept the two of them giggling throughout. The sun was shining as they emerged from the church and their guests greeted them with huge hugs and smiles. Always one of my favourite parts of the day!

Summer wedding at Kilhey Court

After the ceremony the guests all made their way to Kilhey Court. We hung back to get a few portraits of Sammie and John around the church before they jumped into their vintage Rolls to join everyone.

Kilhey Court has beautiful grounds which we made the most of during the drinks reception. The guests were busy enjoying their canapes so Sammie, John and I made time for a few more pictures of the two of them. We made our way to a nearby field where, to really make the most of those incredible blue skies, I brought out my flash kit. I love creating unique images for my couples and using flash and artificial light really helps me to get creative.

John and Sammie, what a day, I loved being your Kilhey Court wedding photographer!

Colshaw Hall Wedding Photography // Kelley and Jamie

Colshaw Hall Wedding Photography

Back in August I joined Kelley and Jamie for their Colshaw Hall wedding. If you’re a fan of dogs, men in kilts and some epic dancefloor action then you need to feast your eyes on this blog!

Weddings at Colshaw Hall

Colshaw Hall is a luxurious Cheshire wedding venue set on a private estate. Kelley and Jamie fell in love with it as soon as they set eyes on it and, as I drove up the long driveway towards the Hall, I could see why. As you make your way up to the Hall there are gorgeous grounds on either side of the drive, I made note of the Japanese garden and a few other spots that I wanted to head out to later for some couple portraits but I knew I’d be spoilt for choice with locations!

Wedding ceremonies take place in The Stables, a purpose built venue with huge windows that let the light stream in. A photographer’s dream basically! Kelley told me that walking in and seeing everyone she loved, dressed to the nines and ready to celebrate with her and Jamie was her favourite part of the day. I love that moment too, the anticipation of the bride arriving and seeing people’s nerves vanish and turn into excitement and pure happiness. It never gets old!

Wedding Photography at Colshaw Hall

Once the ceremony was over (shout out to Rebecca for her fab reading) Jamie and Kelley emerged into a sea of confetti before being greeted by Digby, their dog and guest of honour. We headed straight into the gardens for some all important family photos with Digby before joining everyone on the lawns for celebratory hugs and lots of fizz!

When I first met Jamie and Kelley at a wedding fair Jamie had told me that he absolutely hated having his photo taken. He was an absolute trooper though and quickly relaxed when we ventured out to explore the grounds for some portraits. I have a sneaking suspicion that’s because I made him look at his beautiful new wife rather than at me and my camera!

And then it was time to party – Jamie’s favourite memory from their day! The dancefloor was packed and some rather, ‘interesting’ shapes were being thrown! Luckily Kelley and Jamie had thought ahead and had provided ‘hangover kits’ for their guests to take away with them. Some of the most useful wedding favours I’ve ever seen!

I loved being part of your Colshaw Hall wedding Jamie and Kelley, thanks so much for having me there! If you are looking for a wedding photographer for your Colshaw Hall wedding then please do get in touch!

Ribble Valley Wedding Photographer

Holmes Mill Wedding PhotographyLiving in Lancashire I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by some absolutely stunning countryside. You don’t get more beautiful though than the incredible Ribble Valley. It’s right on my doorstep so I’m often booked by couples looking for a Ribble Valley wedding photographer. People travel from all over the country to get married here as, along with those breathtaking views, there is no shortage of gorgeous wedding venues.

Based within  the heart of the county, the Ribble Valley lies between Lancashire’s mill towns and the edge of south Yorkshire. Clitheroe, with its medieval castle, sits in the centre of the valley. Made up of small villages, bustling towns and beautiful hills and rivers it’s not surprising to hear that the Ribble Valley is classed as one of the most idyllic places to live in the UK!

Wedding venues in the Ribble Valley

Imagine saying your vows surrounded by green fields. Sipping champagne with a backdrop of  the rolling hills or having your wedding breakfast in one of the Ribble Valley’s incredible wedding venues. There are so many reasons why people choose to get married here. The views are amazing and always make for incredible photos. Whatever the weather (this is Lancashire afterall, sun is not guaranteed!).

I think the Ribble Valley must have more wedding venues than anywhere else in the country, couples really are spoilt for choice. These are just a few of my favourites.

Bartle Hall

Bartle Hall is set on the edge of the Ribble Valley. A converted country house that they describe as ‘relaxed luxury’. Ive got to say that phrase sums the experience up perfectly.

Surrounded by 16 acres of landscaped gardens (and some wonderful wild areas which I love making the most of for photos) Bartle Hall plays host to hundreds of weddings a year. Couples can choose to take over the entire place as exclusive use or decide between holding their wedding in the house or making use of the barn style Balmoral Suite with its private courtyard and BBQ area.

I’m a huge fan of Bartle Hall and it’s easy to see why they’ve been voted the best wedding venue in Lancashire and the North West on many occasions. These are some of my favourite Bartle Hall weddings.

BARTLE HALL WEDDING

Holmes Mill

An old, converted mill which houses a brewery. Sounds like a dream doesn’t it! What a place for a party!

This is such a great venue. Set right in the heart of Clitheroe, the Mill has been lovingly converted over the last few years into one of Lancashire’s most unique wedding venues. Ceremonies are held in the Mill, guests sit on converted cinema seats (I LOVE this touch) and the walls have been kept bare for that industrial, urban vibe. The oldest part of the Mill, the weaving shed, was recently converted into the 1823 Bistro and Hotel. This is where wedding breakfast and receptions take place or for couples who like to party they can hold their entire day in the Mill itself, surrounded by exposed brick and huge windows it’s a brilliant room and I always love it when I get weddings here.

I recently photographed John and Ann’s wedding there. They had so many brilliant ideas for their day and I can’t wait to shoot another Holmes Mill wedding.

Mitton Hall

Right in the heart of the Ribble Valley lies Mitton Hall. As a wedding venue it’s breathtaking. The location is beautiful and guests are greeted by incredible views as they relax in the gardens after the ceremony.

Mitton Hall manages to combine the grandeur of a country manor with the cosiness of a rural retreat. The Party Room is filled with natural light so is perfect for civil ceremonies (us photographer’s love natural light and lots of windows!) while in the evening it’s a great space to let your hair down and hit the dance floor.

My favourite thing about Mitton Hall though…the food! It’s delicious. I’ve sampled a lot of wedding dinners in my time and Mitton is always my number one!

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a couple of Mitton Hall weddings. These are just a few of my favourites.

Inn at Whitewell

The Inn at Whitewell always comes top of the list whenever I think of Ribble Valley wedding venues. This gastropub is equally popular with ramblers and wedding couples alike and it’s easy to see why. With oak beams, stone floors and open fires this is a cosy winter wedding venue but the amazing surroundings and the stepping stones across the river (yes, really!) make it perfect for spring and summer weddings too. A perfect all rounder!

Plus there’s a church right next door which makes traveling between ceremony and reception venues nice and easy!

I’m a huge fan of the Inn at Whitewell, it’s perfect for relaxed couples looking for a chilled out venue for their day and they are my favourite kinds of couples! I would love to work at the Inn at Whitewell so if you are getting married there please get in touch!

Eaves Hall

Just beyond Clitheroe, down winding country lines, lies Eaves Hall. A manor house and luxury wedding venue it is surrounded by the stunning countryside of the Ribble Valley. An exclusive use venue, couples get the entire place to themselves on their wedding day, as well as the use of a Lodge which is perfect for groom prep or for families to stay over.

The seven acres of grounds are great to explore with couples. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of portrait shoots here. Inside is equally stunning which means Eaves Hall is the perfect venue for winter weddings or those unpredictable rainy days. At that point I break out my lights and we can get all creative with your photos!

I’m always over the moon when I get booked to photograph an Eaves Hall wedding. Check out my most recent one – for Katie and Mark here.

Beeston Manor

Beeston Manor is a 16th century barn, complete with exposed beams and beautiful sandstone walls. Over the years it’s been carefully converted into one of the Ribble Valley’s most beautiful rural wedding venues. In the right season the barn is surrounded by cornfields, I obviously take full advantage of these for pictures whenever I get the chance!

This venue has won so many awards and was recently named “Wedding Events Team of the Year” in the 2019 Wedding Industry Awards. You know you’re in good hands with the team here with an accolade like that!

I recently photographed Lisa and Andy’s Beeston Manor wedding. Take a look over on my blog.

Bashall Barn

Last, but by no means least, is the brilliant Bashall Barn. With breath taking views across the Ribble Valley and great food photographing weddings at this venue is always a highlight of my year!

All food is produced on site so couples can be sure they’re getting an excellent dinner – as well as wood fired pizzas or a hog roast! If you’re both foodies then this is the venue for you!

The venue itself is a unique barn conversion, with the option to get married outside – providing our Lancashire weather plays ball! The huge glass doors in the main room give a real outside in feel to the place which is perfect when you’re getting married in the heart of such amazing countryside.

If you’re looking for a Bashall Barn wedding photographer then I’d love to hear from you! Get in touch if you’re getting married anywhere in the Ribble Valley and are on the hunt for a wedding photographer.

Eaves Hall Wedding Photography // Katie and Mark

Eaves Hall Wedding Photography

Eaves Hall Wedding PhotographyI’ve got a cracking blog post to share with you today. Katie and Mark’s Eaves Hall wedding. You won’t believe that these photos were taken in March, the sun was shining, the sky was an incredible blue and we spent most of the day outside, making the most of the mild weather. They couldn’t have chosen a better day!

Winter wedding at Eaves Hall

Katie knew she wanted to get married at Eaves Hall before Mark had proposed to her. I’m not surprised, it’s one of the North West’s premier wedding venues. A country house set in acres of the Ribble Valley countryside, Eaves Hall regularly scoops awards for ‘best wedding venue’ and I always know I’m in for a good day whenever I shoot here.

The grounds are lovely, with lots of hidden nooks and crannies which are perfect for portraits and the interior is equally as stunning. Katie was determined to keep any additional decorations simple to really make the most of Eaves Hall. Beautiful flowers by The Flower Shop, Clitheroe were all that were needed to add a touch of colour to the ceremony and wedding breakfast.

Eaves Hall morning preparations

I love it when the entire wedding day is all at one venue. It makes for a really relaxed day for both the couple and their guests. No one needs to worry about driving anywhere or getting to the ceremony on time when all a bride needs to do is stroll downstairs!

Katie and her girls were getting ready in Eaves Hall’s beautiful bridal suite when Mark arrived and headed straight to the bar. Typical groom prep! As he enjoyed a pint and said hello to friends and family Katie was being helped into her stunning Justin Alexander dress. She had decided to keep things nice and simple and she looked beautiful. I love the sparkle that she added with her veil, earrings and Swarovski bracelet.

After a short, but very sweet sunlit wedding ceremony we all headed outside to the terrace where Katie and Mark were enveloped in a sea of hugs and well wishes. As their guests enjoyed delicious canapes and lots of fizz the three of us decided to sneak off to get some portraits. Katie had told me that she was feeling pretty nervous about this point in the day so I reassured her that we’d just be going for a stroll and all they needed to do was relax and have a chat with each other! By the end of our portraits the two of them were posing like absolute pros and we had such a good laugh!

Eaves Hall is perfect for both summer and winter weddings – the acres of grounds surrounding the hall make a gorgeous backdrop for portraits when the weather is fine but if it’s raining or even snowing then the hall’s interior is fantastic. During the evening I set up some lights and took Katie and Mark away for a few more portraits. A perfect chance for them to have a breather after all the emotions of the speeches! The snooker room is a great spot for some creative portraits so I knew that’s where I wanted us to start. I’m over the moon with how those pictures turned out and I know they’re some of Katie and Mark’s favourites too.

I’m going to hand over to Katie for some final words on why her and Mark decided to book me for their Eaves Hall Wedding Photography. Thanks so much, I’m so glad you did, I loved being part of your day! If you are getting married at Eaves Hall and want to chat more then please get in touch!

“I first met Nik when I went to a wedding fayre at Manchester Hall and knew straight away I wanted him to shoot our wedding. His style is so modern and perfect for someone like me who doesn’t like their photos taken. He’s also so laid back and the best type of person to have around on your wedding morning. We are elated with the photos.”
